The Beginnings of NaNo 2o12

So...this is basically my keep-along thing. Seeing as how I'm handwriting/typewriting/typing my ENTIRE novel, this is the place for anyone interested to see how I'm doing. I'll post my word count, how the plot is, what I'm eating, anythin n everything here ^-^

National American Miss

So, I recieved a letter the other day inviting me to the Nation American Miss Alabama open call. I really want to go. Really really bad. But the problem is, I know after the open call [if I do get to do it] it's going to cost money...money I don't have. And although I can get a job if I wanted...I can't.

Because of track.

It starts Monday and practice goes all week, with meets mainly on Fridays and Saturdays. Practice is until 5. There aren't a lot of places that will hire me currently, because I'm 17 and can only work til 10pm. So, even if I did get a job. I'd only work around 5 hours a day - 30 Hours a week.

But I really want to do the NAM. I've wanted to every year that I get the invite. My momma is always telling me I should try modelling and I would love to, before I get to the point where all the modelling agencies want me to do is be naked. >.>

Has anyone done this before?? How did you pay the fees? I have until February 26, 27, or 28 to make up my mind. -sigh- :(

  1. I competed in it last year! I was in the Southern California competition and won Best Thank You Note and Fourth Runner-Up in talent. I can show you my videos if you'd like... they're on Youtube.
I also competed at Nationals, but I was incredibly lucky because I won fourth runner-up so then I got to compete in the talent competition. I also got first runner-up in academic achievement. I was also lucky because nationals was about a 20 minute drive away from me.
It's a great experience, especially if you find a few friends before and during the competition. It IS expensive, but apparently it's cheaper than other pageants? I like how there is no swimsuit competition, fake hair (weaves are allowed, though, but nothing too fake), or excessive makeup.
I didn't get a job to raise the money last year, but I know I will probably have to this year. I got a few sponsors, but it's incredibly difficult to do it that way if you don't have connections. I didn't, and I think I only got 30 dollars through sponsors. The rest I got it through a garage sale, my grandparents, and selling stuff on eBay.
If you need anymore help, I'm happy to help, although I'm definitely not the girl to talk to about sponsors!

  2. Oh wow, that's crazy haha. I just want to do it to say I did y'know?? What were all the different competitions like?? [and how is everything like when it comes to the competitions. Super competitive? Could you explain more about how the process works? THe site doesn't provide much >.<] I have a friend doing it with me, she did it about 3 years back and won something.
    Not sure what though :/
She's 18 this year so it's the last year she can do it so we decided to do it together.
What were the interviews with the judges like? Do they ask a lot of questions?
Gosh, I have so much to ask haha >.<

  3. I think it depends how many girls are in your division. I competed with 130+ girls, so it was definitely competitive in the main event. I had a background in skating, so the talent competition wasn't super hard. I pretty much whipped up a dance in a month and performed it. I can give you the link if you'd like.
You pretty much compete in the three main events (interview, formal wear, and personal intro) and can add on from there. They have optional competitions like talent, actress, spokesmodel, casual wear, etc, but those cost extra.
I think I found the interview to be the most fun. They ask questions off the "resume" that you give them, and they'll add stuff like what magazine cover you'd like to be on, where would you like to visit, etc. Nothing about politics or religion or anything controversial. You get about a minute with each judge, and there are, I think 5-9 judges.
Let me know if you need anything else :)

    1. I think they'll be a lot for me too in comprtitiin wise. I live in lil Alabama and everyone wants their moment to shine. I've done competitive cheerleading before so I have a lot of skill in gymnastics but the dancing part I was never good at and I've done color guard for 2 years.
The main thing that worries me is that I'm not very good with spot on questions whih is kinda why i want to do this because I'll hqave toq face my fears.
      Videos would be great!

  4. Well, you don't have to dance! Gymnastics would be a lot of fun to watch as well!
I don't have a video of my personal intro up and videos during interview aren't allowed, but if you are interested in seeing my talent competitions, here they are:

I also have a video of my formal wear exhibition for nationals, but it's definitely not the best because I didn't really get along with my escort (it was my friend's boyfriend...) and I also have a video of my personal intro. Maybe I'll try putting it up on my blog. :)

  5. Well, most of the time, gymnastics involves dance, and I can't really do that too well haha. I tumble best and a lot of flips aren't too interesting to watch, especially if there's no mat. :/ haha.
You definitely should post your personal intro haha. :)

  6. I just realized that my formal wear walk and my personal intro have my full name on it. Is it possible if I can put it as a private video on youtube and then give you the link via email?

    1. Yeah, if you do, just email me at jaclynjkoerber[@]yahoo[.]com :) I was looking up a few on youtube last night and it seems simple, just...nerve wracking haha. I really need to get used to talking in front of a group of people.
Question - if I made up a routine to a song, do you think people would be interested in flag twirling?? I'm sure my band teacher would let me borrow some and I'm currently like 20x's better in that than tumbling xD -fail-

  7. I think flag twirling can be a lot of fun if it's done right! Of course, everything will need to be done well (same can be said about everything though), and if you're really good in it, you should do well :)
I'll give you my email and I'll try to put it up soon.
